An eye test checks the visual performance of the eyes. Inadequate vision makes everyday life more difficult, whether at work or in traffic.
You should therefore have your eyes tested regularly to make sure that everything is still in order.
Why should I have an eye test?
Visual performance or visual acuity is the resolution of the eye without optical aids for correction. As visual acuity usually changes slowly and gradually, poor vision is not immediately recognized. Poor eyesight can often go unnoticed. It is therefore important to visit your ophthalmologist or optician regularly, even if there is no suspicion. However, if you notice that your vision is blurred or other symptoms such as headaches, dry eyes and sore eyes become noticeable, you should have an eye test as soon as possible.
What is done during an eye test?
An eye test is divided into an objective and a subjective refraction. The objective measurement is carried out fully automatically with a so-called autorefractometer, i.e. without the involvement of the patient. The values measured here provide a reference point for the subsequent subjective refraction. The ophthalmologist or optician can also get an idea of the approximate spectacle values that will be required.
The subjective measurement involves the patient. This means that the ophthalmologist or optician relies on the patient's information and uses it to determine the correct spectacle values.
The eye test is usually carried out using vision test charts with various symbols.
One of the best-known symbols is the so-called Landolt ring. (Image: Landolt ring) Eye charts with numbers, letters or pictures are also used.
For each test chart, the patient indicates how well they can perceive or recognize something. The test requires small measuring glasses with different visual acuities, which are then placed in front of the patient's eyes during the measurement using trial glasses. The correct strength with which the patient sees best is determined step by step.
How often should I have an eye test?
In general, it is advisable to have your eyes checked two to three times between the ages of 20 and 39 and then every two to three years from the age of 40. From the age of 65, it is recommended to have an eye test every one to two years. However, these are only the standard values if there are no symptoms or a known previous visual defect. General health must also be taken into account. A disease such as diabetes, medication or hereditary eye diseases can lead to the ophthalmologist recommending that the eyes be checked more frequently.
It is generally recommended to check your eyes regularly.
